Water vapour therapy

The treatment of an enlarged prostate using steam (water vapour ablation, RezumTM) is still a relatively „new“ treatment method. However, some clinics in Hungary already offer steam therapy.

Tissue ablation using steam is considered a minimally invasive method (keyhole surgery). The general advantage of these techniques is that large incisions are not necessary, fewer side effects occur, and the procedure takes less time. You can leave the clinic sooner and get back on your feet quicker. This allows you to return to your daily life and work in a timely manner.

Important information:

Rezum shrinks the enlarged prostate by precisely injecting 103°C warm water vapour into the tissue; this causes scarring, shrinking, and relieves the urethra – minimally invasively, without an abdominal incision.

The procedure is performed endoscopically via the urethra under local anaesthetic or light sedation, usually takes a maximum of 15 minutes; a bladder catheter is then worn for a few days. Outpatient procedures are possible in some places.

Symptoms often improve after a few weeks, with the full effect typically seen after 3–6 months. One randomised study reported sustained improvements in symptoms, urinary stream and quality of life for up to five years.

Common complaints are temporary (e.g., light bleeding, urgency); continence, erectile and ejaculatory function are usually preserved. If tissue growth recurs, Rezum can be repeated.

Recommended for mild to moderate symptoms, prostate volume approximately 30–80 cm³, when medication is insufficient or classic surgery (TURP/laser) is not suitable; advantages include a rapid return to everyday life and a focus on preserving sexual function. Not suitable for, among other things, artificial sphincter or penile implant. Costs are covered by health insurance in many cases – please clarify beforehand.

The choice of therapy will always be made individually with your urologist. Seek detailed advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions in connection with Rezum therapy.

Rezum is a minimally invasive steam treatment that selectively shrinks prostate tissue. Symptoms often improve after a few weeks, with the full effect typically occurring after 3–6 months. A randomised study reports sustained improvements in symptoms, urine flow, and quality of life for up to five years. Side effects are predominantly mild and temporary. Overall, the procedure is considered effective and well-tolerated.

The urologist inserts a fine probe through the urethra and injects small amounts of 103°C steam into the excess prostate tissue. The actual procedure usually takes a maximum of 15 minutes; local anaesthesia or light sedation is often sufficient. Afterwards, you will wear a urinary catheter for a few days. Many clinics treat patients as outpatients; everyday and work activities are usually possible again after a short recovery period.

A key advantage: continence and the ability to achieve erection and ejaculation are generally expected to be preserved. Common side effects such as slight blood in the urine or temporary urinary urgency usually subside in the weeks following the procedure. If tissue regrowth occurs later, Rezum can be repeated.

Rezum is particularly recommended for mild to moderate symptoms, a prostate volume of approximately 30–80 cm³, and when medication is insufficiently effective or a classic surgical procedure (TURP/laser) is not an option. Rezum is not suitable for conditions such as an artificial urinary sphincter or penile implants, among others. Your urologist will discuss with you whether Rezum is suitable for your condition and your personal goals (e.g., preserving sexual function, a swift return to everyday life).

The goal of Rezum is noticeable relief when urinating – with the shortest possible recovery time and maintenance of quality of life.
